NCI is collaborating with the University of Greifswald to examine chromosomal translocations as intermediate endpoints in lymphomagenesis. Chromosomal translocations are a critical molecular event in the development of hematopoietic malignancies. Translocation t(14;18) is found in follicular lymphoma and other types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This translocation may also be detected in many healthy individuals. Investigators reported that the prevalence, frequency and number of different t(14;18)-bearing clones in healthy individuals all significantly increase with age. They also found that individuals without lymphoma may have circulating t(14;18) levels in the range of lymphoma patients and that t(14;18) levels predict lymphoma recurrence for patients in clinical remission.
