A case-control study of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) has been launched by NCI in collaboration with the University of Nebraska. The study is being conducted at the following centers in North Africa: the National Cancer Institute – Cairo; the Tanta Cancer Center and Gharbiah Cancer Society in Tanta, Egypt; the Institut Salah Azaiz, Tunisia; the Oncology Center Ibn Rochd, Morocco; and the Department of Medicine, University of Marrakech, Morocco. The study will include approximately 400 IBC cases, 400 non-IBC cases, and 400 visitor controls in these centers in North Africa. In addition to questionnaire-based data-collection, the study involves the collection of anthropometric measurements, saliva, digital photographs of the breasts of IBC and non-IBC cases, and paraffin-embedded tumor tissue for IBC cases and non-IBC breast cancer controls at selected centers.
