After cancer patients undergo chemotherapy or when individuals suffer a stroke or a heart attack, their heart muscle or brain tissue undergoes oxygen free radical damage as a result of iron being released from the tissues. Chelation, or binding, of this iron in the tissues by small molecule iron chelating drugs has the potential to prevent this irreversible free radical tissue damage. Dr. Hasinoffs research program aims to synthesize new drugs for use in the prevention of oxygen free radical tissue damage, thus, improving the quality of life when these medical conditions occur.
