Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's established collaboration with the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), the first and only comprehensive cancer center in Uganda, lead to the construction of a new cancer facility. Serving as a research, training and clinical care site, the new facility will include an outpatient clinic, chemotherapy infusion rooms, research laboratories, molecular diagnostics labs, a specimen repository, a training center, a library and a data center. Fred Hutch Global Oncology's strategic investment will help elevate UCI as a state-of-the-art regional cancer center that can treat up to 20,000 patients a year. The building opened in May 2015, training Ugandans to reduce the cancer burden through research and clinical care. To date, 50 Uganda doctors, including 8 oncologist have been trained.
