This program will study how metabolism and mitochondria (the organells within the cells that produce energy) are involved in the cause of cancer and pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lung). These two diseases share common features since the cells in the wall of the lung blood vessels in pulmonary hypertension, grow like cancer cells until they occlude the lumen of the vessels. In addition to work in animals this program will also perform studies to test these experimental therapies on human beings, for the first time. In addition to potential new treatments for these devastating diseases, this work will support a training program to teach scientists and doctors how to study the mitochondria and also how to move their findings from the laboratory to the clinic.
